Embodied: Reframing Menstrual Health Education

Mediums: Illustrator & InDesign
Size: Various Sizes
Client: School Project, Thesis I & II

As a capstone to the Graphic Design program, I spent a full school year developing my final thesis project. In the first semester, I researched and created a proposal book, which outlines the problem, it’s context, and proposes the design solutions that can solve that problem. I conducted surveys and interviews, read academic studies, and analyzed competitors in order to come to my final solution. In the second semester, I followed the plans I had developed and created real design solutions for this issue. I chose to focus on reframing menstrual health education for girls between grades 4-8. There’s a huge gap in the current education system, and young girls aren’t adequately prepared when they get their first period. My design solutions seek to educate and empower these girls, and give them the tools and confidence they need to take charge of their health and pay attention to their bodies. The main deliverable for this project is a comprehensive textbook that walks teachers and parents through appropriate lesson plans for each grade level. I created conversation cards to act as a conversation starter and a reflective journal for students to write about what they are learning, and what’s going on in their bodies. Finally, I designed cheat sheet postcards and worksheets to further encourage bodily awareness and confidence.
